After installing a custom pool in the small back yard the owners wanted a spot that could be shared with grandchildren and enjoyed for its beauty as well. First a severe drainage problem had to be solved as 8 or 9 uphill neighbors contributed to mud washing into the pool during heavy rainfall with the existing grade. A berm was installed to stop flow into the pool and a large drop inlet box with 8 inch pipe to carry water off was fit in between the fence and the pool house. Ornamental plants were planted on top of the berm and in the swale to mask the utilitarian nature of the feature. Tall shrubs soften the interior of the privacy fence and flowering perennials and groundcovers cover the landscape to provide pool season color. Landscape lighting extends the time of use for the family into early evening and beyond.
